Island offers basketball, blackjack tourneys

Armchair athletes and those looking for an ace in the hole have plenty here to keep them busy this weekend.

For hoops junkies, junior college teams will play basketball at the convention center under the eyes of curious coaches, scouts and fans. Although the Island has hosted Division I, II and high school tournaments before, this weekend’s event marks its first junior college offering.

“One of the fun things about this is part of the people who are coming to watch it are Division I and Division II coaches,” said Dan Quandt, executive director of the South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“We’re going to get a lot of positive feedback,” he said of visiting coaches. “There’s more than just hosting tournaments.”

Games begin this afternoon and conclude Sunday evening.

Finally, for those who fancy themselves as Matt Damon’s character in the poker flick “Rounders,” Bahia Mar Resort and Conference Center will have a Texas Hold ‘Em and Blackjack tournament. Money raised will go toward community-development efforts.

“It’s just a totally unique way to help raise money” for a worthwhile cause, Quandt said of the South Padre Island Community Foundation.

The group cannot give away money but will give raffle tickets, with a trip to Las Vegas as the grand prize.
